Calque Ideas provides an opportunity for writers to think aloud, using their own experiences and knowledge to approach topics in an accessible and attractive way.
The facile cry of “that didn’t scare me” is occasionally proclaimed as an indication of horror’s failure. But perhaps this is too blunt a measure for this august mode’s endless variations of tone, aim, and impact. Although popularly considered a unified genre—Horror is horror!—avid readers know the terrain of the broader field can be far more nuanced and complex in its effects. In Some Thoughts on Horror, Brian J. Showers assesses the horror genre’s varied possibilities for literary effect, offering thoughts on a framework for considering the more delicate and interesting facets available to genre practitioners and aficionados alike.
